How to breed Japanese Blue Grass Guppy – Part II: Which formula will we use

In article Part I, we introduced 6 formulas for Grass Guppies breeding. Here they are:

_______________Parents_____________________________Child______________________

  1. Blue Grass(Bb) x Blue Grass(Bb) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 25% Red Grass(BB)+25% Asian Blau(bb)
  2. Blue Grass(Bb) x Red Grass(BB) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 50% Red Grass(BB)
  3. Blue Grass(Bb) x Asian Blau(bb) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 50% Asian Blau(bb)
  4. Red Grass(BB) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Blue Grass(Bb)
  5. Asian Blau(bb) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Asian Blau(bb)
  6. Red Grass(BB) x Red Grass(BB) = 100% Red Grass(BB)

And the formula 4 attracted our attention.

Red Grass(BB) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Blue Grass(Bb)

It means all the children of Red Grass and Asian Blau are Blue Grass. But this formula in only for the BLUE color inheritance, it does not affect the genetic expression of black speckles. Exquisite, evenly distributed, and clear black speckles are one of the standards of Blue Grass Guppy appreciation. So, it is necessary to pick the parent fishes that have good-looking black speckles gene. There is a serious problem for Asian Blau. Whether male or female, there is no black speckles on Asian Blau. It is hard to tell whether it has good-looking black speckles gene or not. Of course you can find the answer from its children. But you have to spend months and the result is likely to disappoint you.

This is the reason why the Blue Grass breeders do not use the formula 4 to breed next generation.

It seems that we can only use formula 1 and 2.

  1. Blue Grass(Bb) x Blue Grass(Bb) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 25% Red Grass(BB)+25% Asian Blau(bb)
  2. Blue Grass(Bb) x Red Grass(BB) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 50% Red Grass(BB)

From these two formulas, we can get the same amount of what we want – 50% Blue Grass.

It is also hard to tell whether it is Blue Grass or Red Grass from a female Grass Guppy. Because female Blue Grass and female Red Grass are all in blue. But you can distinguish it by its children. Use male Blue Grass to mate with the female Grass, if Asian Blau appear, the mother fish is 100% Blue Grass, if there is no Asian Blau, then the mother fish is Red Grass.

female Grass Guppy

To minimize uncertainty, we usually pick male Blue Grass and female Grass Guppy as the parent fishes. In this way, we don’t need to consider whether the female fish is Blue Grass or Red Grass. In both situations, we can get 50% Blue Grass baby fishes.

male Blue Grass Guppy

On the contrary, if pick male Red Grass to mate with female Grass Guppy, there are two different results, the lucky one: the female fish is Blue Grass, congratulations! You will get 50% Blue Grass babies; another one result: the female fish is Red Grass, then you will get one whole tank of Red Grass.

Red Grass Guppy

In next article, we will talk about the key points for picking a male Blue Grass as parent fish, stay tuned.
