As we discussed on Part II, usually we pick female grass guppy as parent fish, whether it is Blue Grass or Red Grass. We will talk about four key points.
1. Fish age
Usually, females mature in 3 and a half months. And they will hatch the first-round baby fishes in 4 and a half months. There will be about 40 baby fishes born in first-round, and we will get about 100 babies in second-round.
The strong female with thick and short caudal peduncle will pass this excellent gene to offspring.
3. Dorsal fin
For female fish, different from male’s big dorsal fin, we emphasize the shape. The triangle or semicircle shape will be the best. When the dorsal fin is propped up, if the first supporting bone is perpendicular to the body, this shape will be perfect.
4. Black speckles
The black speckles on female grass guppy are smaller and denser than on male. So, to let the male baby grass guppy get exquisite and dense patterns, the female parent fish have smaller and denser spots, the better. Some female grass guppies have black and blue tails, there is no speckles. Actually, the speckles are too small and too dense to distinguish just with our eyes. On the contrary, these female fish are the best.
Next, we will talk about the notices of guppies breeding. Stay tuned.
