How to breed Japanese Blue Grass Guppy – Part IV: Key points for picking a female Grass Guppy as parent fish

Posted on 3 Comments

As we discussed on Part II, usually we pick female grass guppy as parent fish, whether it is Blue Grass or Red Grass. We will talk about four key points.

Female and male grass guppies

1. Fish age

Usually, females mature in 3 and a half months. And they will hatch the first-round baby fishes in 4 and a half months. There will be about 40 baby fishes born in first-round, and we will get about 100 babies in second-round.

2. Size

The strong female with thick and short caudal peduncle will pass this excellent gene to offspring.

3. Dorsal fin

How to breed Japanese Blue Grass Guppy – Part III: Key points for picking a male Blue Grass as parent fish

In general, the selection standards of male Blue Grass include four main aspects: body shape, fins shape, pattern, and color.

About fish age

Usually, we pick 2 to 6-month-old male fishes as parent fishes. 2-month-old fishes are the best, because they can be parent fishes for 4 months. But it’s a little difficult to confirm whether a two-month-old fish meets the standards because it is still growing.

Next, we talk about the four main aspects.

1. Body shape

This standard is fit for all types of guppies.

a. Size

Usually, the length of whole fish needs to be more than 4cm(1.57inches), of course the bigger the size the better. The length ratio of caudal fin to body is at least 1:1, it’s better that caudal fin is longer than the body. This size standard is fit for all varieties of guppies.

b. Caudal peduncle

General speaking, the best caudal peduncle is thick and short. Such a caudal peduncle can better support dorsal fin and caudal fin, making the swimming stroke more beautiful and elegant.

c. Junction

The junction means the connection between dorsal fin or caudal fin and fish body, the bigger the better.

How to breed Japanese Blue Grass Guppy – Part II: Which formula will we use

Posted on 4 Comments

In article Part I, we introduced 6 formulas for Grass Guppies breeding. Here they are:

_______________Parents_____________________________Child______________________

  1. Blue Grass(Bb) x Blue Grass(Bb) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 25% Red Grass(BB)+25% Asian Blau(bb)
  2. Blue Grass(Bb) x Red Grass(BB) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 50% Red Grass(BB)
  3. Blue Grass(Bb) x Asian Blau(bb) = 50% Blue Grass(Bb) + 50% Asian Blau(bb)
  4. Red Grass(BB) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Blue Grass(Bb)
  5. Asian Blau(bb) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Asian Blau(bb)
  6. Red Grass(BB) x Red Grass(BB) = 100% Red Grass(BB)

And the formula 4 attracted our attention.

Red Grass(BB) x Asian Blau(bb) = 100% Blue Grass(Bb)

It means all the children of Red Grass and Asian Blau are Blue Grass. But this formula in only for the BLUE color inheritance, it does not affect the genetic expression of black speckles. Exquisite, evenly distributed, and clear black speckles are one of the standards of Blue Grass Guppy appreciation. So, it is necessary to pick the parent fishes that have good-looking black speckles gene. There is a serious problem for Asian Blau. Whether male or female, there is no black speckles on Asian Blau. It is hard to tell whether it has good-looking black speckles gene or not. Of course you can find the answer from its children. But you have to spend months and the result is likely to disappoint you.

This is the reason why the Blue Grass breeders do not use the formula 4 to breed next generation.
